Accessibility Statement

Many of the families who use this site are managing a great deal at once, often on a phone, often late at night, sometimes with a screen reader or with the text size turned up. This site is built to work in those conditions.

What we are aiming for

We build to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at level AA. That is the standard most commonly used to judge whether a website is usable by people with disabilities, and it is the bar we hold ourselves to.

What we have done

• Structure that makes sense without sight. Real headings in order, real lists, real buttons and links, so a screen reader can move through a page and announce what things are.
• Keyboard access. Every link, button, menu and form field can be reached and used with a keyboard alone, with a visible outline showing where you are. There is a skip link at the top of each page so you can jump straight to the content.
• Colour contrast chosen for legibility, not for brand. Our body text, link and button colours were picked to meet the AA contrast ratio. Where our brand colour did not pass for text, we used a darker one instead rather than accept a colour that is hard to read.
• Text that resizes. Type is set in relative units, so increasing the text size in your browser enlarges the page without breaking the layout or cutting words off.
• Respect for reduced motion. If your device is set to reduce motion, the fades and reveals on this site turn themselves off.
• Meaningful alternative text on photographs, and decorative graphics hidden from screen readers so they are not read out as noise.
• Forms with labels. Every field has a visible label tied to it, required fields are marked in text rather than by colour alone, and errors are described in words.
• No third party clutter. Fonts and scripts are served from our own domain, so pages stay light and load quickly on a slow connection.

Where we know we fall short

Being honest about this is more useful than a clean claim:

• This site has not yet been through an independent accessibility audit. Our conformance with WCAG 2.1 AA is our own assessment, not a verified one.
• Some content on the site is still marked as being confirmed, and those placeholders will read oddly to a screen reader until the real details replace them.
• We have not yet tested every page against every combination of screen reader and browser.

If something gets in your way

Tell us, and be as specific as you can: the page you were on, what you were trying to do, and what device or assistive technology you were using. We will treat it as a fault to fix, not a complaint to file.
